Mukashi Kindai Ryu Martial Arts
And
Soke Rick Boyer
Soke Boyer was born September 1939 in
Fairfield, Illinois, U.S.A. In 1964. At the age of
24 years, he began his study of the martial arts under the instruction of Shihan
Albert C.
Church, at Charleston, S.C.
The late shihan passed away in 1980. Although he was
the
soke of the martial arts system Kamishin Ryu, he still was called Shihan by some
of his
older students.
Soke Boyer was under the influence of several styles of martial
arts while
a student of Soke Church. Such arts were Shaolin Ji Kempo, Kooha Kempo Tetsuken
Ryu
karate and Hakkoryu Ju-Jitsu, Kamishin Ryu, and various Okinawan weapons
(Kobudo).
In 1966, Soke Boyer moved to Raleigh, N.C. to work in radio
broadcasting and
engineering. While keeping up his training, he would travel to Charleston once a
month
for further training. While in Raleigh, he was introduced to Shito-Ryu karate by
Godan
Richard Baillargeon of the Seishin-Kai Karate Union.

While in Raleigh he opened his first dojo, the Raleigh Karate Club.
At one of the many clinics he attended, on June 28, 1968 in Wilmington, N.C. Soke Boyer received his first black belt, Shodan, after being tested by a panel of black belts. One of the sensei's on the panel was Soke Clement Riedner, at the time held the rank of Nidan in Seishin kai.
Along with his karate training Soke Boyer was training in Hakkoryu Ju-Jitsu. He personally made trips to Akron, Ohio to train under Renshi Kaiden James Benko, the highest ranked master in Hakkoryu Ju-Jitsu in the U.S.A. at that time. In 1969, he received his Shodan 1st degree black belt in Hakkoryu Ju-Jitsu.
While in Raleigh, he became training consultant to the Raleigh. N.C. Police Department, working closely with the police department in developing
training programs in officer self-defense, night stick tactics, and riot control. He was accepted as a police instructor in the National Police Self- Defense Association. He worked with the Raleigh Recreation Department in developing and instructing special female self-defense courses. He also had a special female self- defense program Monday through Friday mornings on WRAL TV, Channel 5.
In 1969, Soke Boyer moved back to Charleston, S.C. to work and live. Soke Church
cross/trained/graded him to Sandan (3rd Degree) in Kamishin-Ryu, and was
instrumental in helping him to open his new dojos, The Southeastern Schools of Self
Defense, which served as
the Honbu/headquarters for Mukashi Kindai Kai International.
For the next several years Soke Boyer trained under Soke Church and operated the
Southeastern Schools Of Self-Defense.
In 1971, he moved his school and family to Summerville, S.C. and became a member of
Kamishin Ryu Nippon Kobudo Rengokai (Japanese [Nippon] Ancient Martial
Art Way [Kobudo] Allied Association [Rengokai]) under Soke Church. In the early 70's he was contacted by his friend Soke Riedner, who is the director of
the Christian Black Belt Association, and soon became a member and continued his
training with Soke Riedner in Hakkoryu Ju-Jitsu. Soke Boyer is listed in the "Who’s Who
Book of Christian Martial Artists.
In 1978, he became a commissioned police officer for the town of Summerville, working
nights and weekends for five years. This afforded him the opportunity to develop and
test various techniques, mostly in Ju-Jitsu and night stick, (PR-24). The last two years
('82 and '83), he made the most conduct warrant arrests, such as drugs, disorderly,
rapes, robbery, and assaults for the Summerville Police Department.
In 1983, Soke Boyer began formulating his plans to develop his own style of martial
arts. By the summer of 1987, the style Mukashi Kindai Ryu was founded. After several
years of refinement, Soke Boyer was afforded the opportunity to have his art reviewed
for official recognition. In the spring of 1990 in Butler, Pennsylvania, after having gone
through a screening process to the World Soke Council, which represents over 30
countries, he presented his martial art style. The council reviewed, evaluated, and
certified Mukashi Kindai Ryu as a valid new style of martial arts with Japanese lineage.
The council further certified Rick Boyer as Shodai Soke (founder and head/family) of
Mukashi Kindai Ryu (MKR) with the rank of Hachidan (8th Black). In
2000 the council recognized Soke Boyer as Judan (10th Black)
